If you have noticed that some of your readers are unsubscribing because you are sending too frequently, you can give them the option to self-select into a schedule that better fits their needs before they unsubscribe.
Here is how to do this.
You will:
- Create a thank you page on your site.
- Clone your Automated RSS Campaign.
- Add a link to your existing campaign's template to change your subscriber's subscription.
- Create a trigger to remove your subscriber from their original subscription when they switch to the new one.
Let's get started.
1. Create a thank you page on your site.
Start by creating the thank you page on your site. It doesn't need to be complicated. It needs to reassure your subscriber that they have completed their goal of changing their subscription. Keep the URL of the new page handy. You will need it later.
2. Clone your Automated RSS Campaign.
Next, we will clone your existing Automated RSS Campaign.
Start at your list's dashboard and click New List.
On the next screen, select Copy and also change the schedule. You will also set the schedule.
Confirm your choice by clicking Create a Duplicate List.
All of the settings, except for the schedule, are now identical to the original list. You can change the name on the next screen, but the rest of the settings are unlikely to need editing. Click Save Settings.
3. Add a link to your existing campaign's template to change your subscriber's subscription.
Navigate back to your original list's dashboard.
Use the Dropdown Arrow next to Settings and Click Edit Template.
Under the Content Tab, find a Button Block and Drag it to your template.
Style the button however you want. In this case, we made it look more like a text link than a button by removing the background under the Button Properties.
Use the Destination Link to Change the Subscription. Set the link to the Thank You page created on your site. Using this URL will reassure your subscribers that they have accomplished their goal of reducing the number of emails they will receive. *Please Note* Destination Link is only highlighted in the screenshot below due to the invalid URL in the text box. It will be gray for you, as it is in the screenshot above.
Send yourself a test email to confirm the email template's new appearance. Please note that the link will not change your subscriptions in tests. If you are happy with your changes, you must click Next Use This Template to apply your changes to apply it. Otherwise, it will be saved as a draft.
Want to add this new schedule option directly to your subscription form? Check out this post on Allowing Your Subscribers to Choose Subscription Options! It walks you throw the workflow using different category-specific campaigns, but works the same with campaigns on different sending schedules. Just be sure to add "daily" or "weekly" to the campaign's title.
4. Create a trigger to remove your subscriber from their original subscription when they switch to the new one.
Finally, you will create the trigger to remove your subscriber from your original list when they subscribe to your new list.
From your new list's dashboard, use the Automation dropdown to select Activity-Based Triggers.
On the next screen, in the first dropdown, If a subscriber: choose Subscribes as the action and choose Unsubscribe from [your original list] under Do this.
Then click Save Rule Changes.
The trigger you created remove the subscriber from the list they believe is sending too many emails. It will also help you keep your subscribers happy, allowing you to maintain a healthy, loyal readership.
