How do I find my SMTP Headers

Sometimes the support team will ask you to provide the SMTP headers of an email. The support team uses this information for a variety of reasons.

When you find the headers for your email, copy them and paste them into a plain text file (.txt).

For windows, right-click on an empty portion of your desktop and select New, then New Text Document. For MacOS, click Launchpad and open a TextEdit File. Click Format to ensure you are creating a plain text file. If it offers to switch to Rich Text, you already have a plain text file.

What part do I need to send you?

Support needs the full text not, the table summary at the top of the original if that is offered. The support team does not need the entire email, generally until the first large space or set of hyphens or dashes. See the screenshot below for an example

Here is how to find the SMTP headers for several common services.

Gmail

  1. From a browser, open Gmail.
  2. Open the email you want to check the headers for.
  3. Next to Reply Reply, click More More and then Show original.

The headers will show in a new window, including fields like authentication results. To get the full message header, click Download original.

Please note that support needs the full text not, the table summary at the top of the original. It will look like this block of text, only not blurred for privacy. The support team only needs the information up to the first line break.
